Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA), the most prestigious and influential wine competition in the world, has awarded Alma 2014, Bodegas Virtus’ “gran reserva” wine, a Platinum Medal. Bodegas Virtus is the only winery in the Ribera del Duero DO to have achieved this distinction in the 2020 edition.
The DWWA recognises wines that stand out for their added excellence, complexity and character, distinguishing them with a prestigious award that positions them amongst the best wines in the world.
The DWWA jury includes many of the foremost experts in the field worldwide, among them Masters of Wine and Master Sommeliers. The judges blind-taste each wine individually, compare notes and reach a consensus on the score and the medal to be awarded to each wine.
Decanter’s Platinum Medal is reserved for wines with very special characteristics. In this edition, the jury has tasted 16,518 wines from 34 different countries, and only 178 have achieved the highest distinction, among them 7 Spanish red wines.
The DWWA jury has awarded Alma 2014 97 points and a Platinum Medal, proclaiming it as one of the best and most prestigious red wines in the world.
Alma is the essence of Bodegas Virtus’ project, a selection, by hand, of the best selection of grapes harvested from 100-year-old vineyards in the heart of the Ribera del Duero region. Clusters of Tinta Fina grapes are confined in a cask for 24 months, resulting in an elegant, powerful and ethereal wine, a unique wine with a soul, of limited production, that reaps the fruits of our effort and hard work in the form of medals.
Bodegas Virtus was born to create unique, exclusive and exquisite wines on the cornerstones of innovation, research and tradition. Our dedication and care have resulted in the creation of wines of the highest quality, with a marked personality, where each glassful echoes the essence that made them possible.
The red wines Virtus, Vega del Yuso and Alma, and the white wine Virtus Blanco are the winery’s creations.
